Welcome to Abia State Emergency Medical Service.
Abia State EMS Ambulance for Emergency Services. There are several pre-hospital factors that come into play before patients or victims reach the hospital that affect their morbidity or mortality outcome. Countries like the USA, the UK, South Africa
and other European countries already have systems that integrate adequate pre-hospital care with efficient hospital care, thereby increasing survival chances for patients needing emergency medical care. In the event of a crisis or accident, our first responders such as the Federal Road Safety Corps, the National Security and Civil Defense organization and the Nigeria Police are minimally trained to handle medical emergencies, and coordination is non-existent. In cases where rescues are successful, victims are conveyed to the hospital using the crudest means of transport most likely the back of a truck or a bus thereby exacerbating their injuries or conditions. These are deaths
that will be preventable with the introduction of Abia State Emergency Medical Services with its quick response times and trained emergency medical personnel. Abia EMS will be available to all Abians regardless of status and will be activated by a simple phone call to our emergency call centre. Callers will be expected to just dial into the call centre and give the operator the details and the location of the incident, and our emergency medical team will respond.
It is a 24 hour, 7 days a week service. Abia-EMS has also embarked on extensive training of Abians in elementary procedures such Basic First Aid, Basic Life Support(BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation(CPR). Apart from medical personnel’s, this training will be made available to individuals in our communities, in schools and other institutions in the state. Already
the first phase of this educational programme has been carried out in all the 17 local government areas. The intention is to have as many Abians skilled in BLS/CPR and Basic First Aid, to be able to intervene when people have crisis like heart attacks, acute strokes, choking, drowning or similar emergency conditions even before the arrival of the emergency medical team. In the long run, Abia state government hopes to see a significant reduction in deaths resulting from disasters and accidents. We are appealing to the citizens of this great state to make good use of this extraordinary opportunity to improve the care we give to the sick and victims of ill-health.
