Training, Integrated Logistics Support (ILS)

Logistics support elements. ILS processes are used to plan how products will be supported over their life cycle, and BMT can either provide direct support for engineering needs or train clients on the fundamentals of ILS practices. Course Overview. ILS processes can significantly improve asset reliability resulting in increased availability and cost efficiencies. Principles of ILS. The ILS concept is explained emphasizing its objectives and outputs and how these impact the performance and total cost of ownership of a system. ILS Elements. The ILS elements are the items and services required to operate and maintain a system in a given environment. They are described and guidance is provided in developing appropriate standards and requirements for the end products to suit the customer's support infrastructure. ILS Product Development. The process of analysis and data recording that produces the ILS elements is introduced. The integrated nature of the analysis and reuse of data in creating a cost-effective support solution is emphasized. This session is needed to understand how the products are related and how changes during the service life will affect other support factors. Reliability, Availability, Maintainability. A system's reliability, availability and maintainability are interrelated and provide a level of confidence that the system will perform its task for the required length of time. The basic theory covering the consideration of all three elements in order to develop a cost effective solution is presented. Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) FMECA is an iterative design process that identifies all of the failure modes of a system and assesses the criticality of each one. This data is an essential element in developing the ILS products. Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) RCM is a process that develops an affordable and effective maintenance program that optimizes the system availability through condition based maintenance. The basic theory underlying RCM processes is presented as well as several RCM standards. Maintenance Task Analysis (MTA) MTA is a process used to identify all of the resources needed to perform each repair and maintenance task that may be required by the system. The process is described as well as the use of the data to produce the support products. Training Needs Analysis (TNA) TNA is the process used to identify the need for and justify the development and delivery of specialized training courses to operate and maintain the system. An overview of the process is presented and is aimed at allowing the student to define the course objectives needed to support new systems. In-Service Reliability Modelling. The ILS concept includes a continuous improvement component that requires the ability to measure the reliability of a system. Methods of measurement are discussed. Maintenance Costs. Maintenance costs can vary widely based on the operating and support concept and the type, location and depth of maintenance. This section explains the cost factors and their interaction to assist the student in understanding maintenance costs to ensure the greatest return for the maintenance dollar. Level of Repair Analysis (LORA) LORA is a process used to determine the most cost-effective repair policy and venue applicable for each item of equipment. The analysis includes cost and effectiveness consideration. Maintenance Planning. This section introduces various techniques that can be used to assist the maintenance manager in optimizing the maintenance schedule. Maintenance Management Data. The maintenance optimization activities in ILS require feedback from the field to confirm and validate the predictions made in the first instance. This data is used for planning and budgeting for future activities. This section discusses what data to collect to support the planning without overburdening the field maintainers.
